Looking for a fresh way to welcome March this year?
Join us at the Barton Springs Mill Educational Center on March 1 for a hands-on baking adventure inspired by Nowruz, the Persian New Year that marks the vernal equinox—typically around March 20. Nowruz has been celebrated for over 3,000 years across a vast region, from the Balkans to Central Asia and the Middle East, and we’re bringing a taste of this rich tradition right here to Texas.
Using our heritage Butler’s Gold flour, you’ll learn to create two varieties of mouthwatering laminated buns—Shor Gogal (savory) and Shirin Gogal (sweet). Golden, flaky, and packed with aromatic spices, these pastries are a culinary highlight of Nowruz festivities. Whether you celebrate the holiday or simply crave new flavors, this class promises to expand your baking repertoire with a delightful global twist.
Shor Gogal (Savory)
Infused with turmeric, fennel seeds, black pepper, ginger, and cumin, Shor Gogal is famed for its radiant color and tantalizing aroma. We’ll guide you through the step-by-step process—from rolling the dough to shaping and baking—so you can serve up these layered pastries as a crowd-pleasing appetizer or a grab-and-go snack.
Shirin Gogal (Sweet)
Cinnamon and cardamom lend warm, cozy notes to Shirin Gogal. This sweet version features delicate layers that capture the essence of these comforting spices, perfect for dessert, a morning coffee treat, or a standout addition to any festive spread.
