Description

Spearmint is a member of the mint family that has less menthol than peppermint and has a sugar-sweet taste that lingers in the mid-mouth.  Well-known in the United States as an ingredient in Southern sweet tea and mixed drinks such as the mojito and mint julep, Spearmint is a versatile herb that can also make a delicious stand-alone cup of hot or iced herbal tea!

Spearmint spices up any dish or recipe, and is especially good with fish, lamb, or even fruit salads.  The mint sauces and jellies that usually accompany lamb dishes are made of the milder-flavored Spearmint.  It also blends perfectly with a glass of iced tea or a cocktail for anyone who prefers a little coolness in their drink.

The leaves can be soaked in water to make Spearmint tea, which is an incredibly refreshing and delicious tea that has several health supporting properties.

To prepare as a tea, pour 8 oz. boiling water over 1 tsp. of herb.  Cover and steep 3-5 minutes, strain and serve immediately.

Product Description

Botanical name:  Mentha spicata L.

Naturally caffeine-free, this loose leaf  Spearmint is a welcome addition to your herbal offerings.

Spearmint makes an incredibly refreshing and delicious tea that has several health supporting properties.

Spearmint contains aromatic compounds that increase the production of digestive fluids and enzymes, relieve smooth muscle spasms, increase blood circulation, promote sweating, relieve pain and are antiseptic.  It also contains astringent compounds that shrink inflamed tissues.  Spearmint has been used to treat indigestion, morning sickness, nausea, menstrual cramps, flatulence, muscle aches, flu and vomiting.  Like all mint, it has a cool and calming effect on the digestive system.

A hardy perennial mint with bright green serrated leaves, Spearmint has served as an important medicinal herb for millennia.  Biblical references to mint suggest it was of such high value as to be used as tithes by the Pharisees along with anise and cumin.

It was recommended hundreds of years ago as a treatment for hiccough, flatulence as well as ‘the giddiness of indigestion’.  Used externally, oil of spearmint, was thought to heal ‘chaps and indolent eruptions.’
